      Art Gallery of Alberta: Exhibits

      Title

      Art Gallery of Alberta: Exhibits

      Description

Set your sights on the Art Gallery of Alberta in the Arts District.

REARVIEW MIRROR - January 28 to April 29
presents contemporary art from Eastern and Central Europe and explores the distinct histories of 11 different countries as seen through the eys of artists born in the late 70's and 80's; after the fall of the Soviet Union and the socialist period of their parents' generation. Looking back to the past and forward to the future, the work of the 22 artists in the exhibition collectively challenge accepted notions of Eastern Europe as a social, political and art historical monolith. Their works often utilize found objects and images that have been imbued with new meaning. This exhibition is guest-curated by Christopher Eamon, and organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta in partnership with The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto. Presented in Edmonton by Enbridge.

CHRIS MILLAR: The Untimely Transmogrification of the Problem - January 28 to April 29
features new work by Calgary artist, Chris Millar. The exhibition includes wall works and free-standing sculpture (including the artist's largest sculpture to date) that are made almost entirely out of paint. Millar's work draws on cartoons, comics and the world of pop culture and punk to "transmogrify" the world, to change or alter it to his own grotesque and humourous effect. The exhibition is guest-curated by Nancy Tousley and presented in the RBC New Works Gallery; a space devoted to the presentation of new works by Alberta artists.

ICONS OF MODERNISM - February 11 to May 21
focuses on the diversity, creativity and achievements of the European avant-garde through a selection of paintings, sculptures, films and photographs from the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. The exhibition includes some 15 masterworks by artists such as Paul Cezanne, Salvador Dali, Marcel Duchamp, Piet Mondrian and Pablo Picasso amongst others, and shows how these artists created new forms with which to convey their experience of rapid technological progress and the changing reality of daily life in the new mechanized age of the early 20th century. The National Gallery of Canada at the Art Gallery of Alberta is presented with the support of Capital Powered Art, an exhibition series sponsored by Capital Power Corporation. Organized by the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Alberta.

      OBSESSIONS a group exhibition

      Title

      OBSESSIONS a group exhibition

      Description

OBSESSIONS a group exhibition exploring the concept of obsession.

Exhibition Reception: Saturday, March 31 from 2-4 pm

Calgary felt artist and curator of this exhibition Jill Nuckles has had a long interest in the artists obsession; the obsessive or compulsive approach to material, technique and repetition. It is that compulsion that fills the work with an inexpressible depth and richness which compels the viewer to engage in an indefinable and profound way. This group exhibition showcases six artists who identify with the theme, whether through process, narration, scale or the physiology of obsessions. Each unique style and interpretation of the theme will allow the viewer a glimpse into the artists’ psyche. The materials, scale and techniques will be appropriate to the individual maker’s practice and voice.

Obsessions runs March 31 – May 5 at the Alberta Craft Council Discovery Gallery, 10186 – 106 Street, Edmonton. The artists will be in attendance for the opening reception on Saturday, March 31 from 2-4 pm. Edmonton Symphony Orchestra - Some traditions just get better with age, and the Last Night of the Proms is one of them.  The yearly end of the London summer festival comes with a feast of mainstays: classical hits, exciting new music, singing traditional songs, and a special guest with remarkable talent. In the ESO's tribute to this legendary annual event, young American soprano Mela Dailey sings Puccini, Lehar, and more.  One of the ESO's most popular conductors, Bob Bernhardt, is back, to turn the Winspear Centre into the Royal Albert Hall just for one night.
