History of the Program
The Downtown Dollar Program was introduced in the fall of 1996, in hopes of capitalizing on holiday shopping. It replaced a previous coupon program, which had several shortfalls. The coupons were limited to use only in attended parkades and surface lots. Couple this with the nature of the coupon, which made it necessary to have expiry dates on them, and the negatives began to outweigh the positives. The Downtown Dollar eliminates these problems by being useable in parking meters, parkades, and surface lots and public transportation without the threat of expiration.
Our program is the envy of many cities as we are fortunate enough to have partnerships with the parkade owners and operators, the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Transit System.
