Honouring the legacy of Cree code talker Charles ‘Checker’ Tomkins

This Remembrance Day, the Royal Alberta Museum presents a screening of Cree Code Talker, a documentary highlighting the vital role of Canadian Cree code talker Charles ‘Checker’ Tomkins during the Second World War.

As Canadian law criminalized Indigenous languages, Cree was used on the battlefield to save lives. The film combines interviews, rare audio, archival documents, war footage, and personal memories, paying homage to a forgotten Canadian war hero.

Alongside the screening, the museum will display objects from other Indigenous veterans who contributed to Canada’s war efforts during World War II.
