There Goes the Neighbourhood

Historically a neglected neighbourhood on Downtown’s eastern edge, The Quarters is finally becoming a prime spot for creatives, startups, hoteliers and condo developers, thanks to the City’s ambitious $99-million rejuvenation plan. Here are a few projects coming to the 40-hectare neighbourhood.

 

Kinistinâw Park

One sure sign of a city’s maturity is when people start caring as much about spaces between buildings as they do about what goes up vertically. Located at the east side of the Armature, Kinistinâw Park, which is Plains Cree for “us three,” recognizes that the area has long been an important gathering space for Indigenous peoples. Kinistinâw Park will be surrounded by greenery and trees, and a public art sculpture will weave itself through the plaza. Phase 1 is expected to be completed by the end of the summer. East side of the Armature (96 Street) between 102A Ave to the north side of 103 Ave

Edmonton Downtown Farmers Market

The Quarters will become a food destination with the relocation of the Edmonton Downtown Farmers Market. In May, the 116-year-old market sets up open-air stalls along 103 Avenue between 96 and 97 streets next to the historic GWG building, or what most know as the Army and Navy building. Once renos are completed in the GWG building, the market will move indoors over the winter to its new home. The market promises a container park, second-storey food fair and Saturday and Sunday openings in its new space. 97 St and 103 Ave  

Ociciwan Contemporary Art Collective

When news broke in 2017 that Ociciwan Contemporary Art Collective was getting a home in the Quarters, there were many reasons for Edmonton’s creatives to applause. For one, the artist-run collective has been homeless since it formed four years ago, but most importantly, it will be Edmonton’s first Indigenous-run centre for contemporary art. The collective will have a strong presence in the neighbourhood in its two-storey building consisting of a gallery, library, community spaces and offices. The centre is expected to open this June. 9604 101A Ave

Quarters Art

Another art organization making a creative splash in the neighbourhood is Quarters Art. The group that brought the annual walking lantern parade to Downtown streets moves into its permanent home this June. CO*LAB, a converted two-storey building sandwiched between 96 and 97 streets will serve as a community-run arts hub. The development will house a gallery, workshop and media rooms, performance space and even more great arts programming. 9641 102A Ave

Quarters LRT Station

Keen to explore The Quarters? The Valley Line LRT will make this area even more accessible with a station located on the south side of 102 Ave. Before arriving at the Quarters LRT Station, the train will pass through a portal decorated with a Chinese gate. The architectural adornment is a nod to the area’s Chinese history. In the early 1900s, Jasper Ave. and 97 St. was the original home of Edmonton’s Chinatown before it was relocated further down 97 street in the ‘80s. South side of 102 Ave

Brighton Block

It was once home to the city’s most prominent photography studio and then later a rooming house, but in 2017, the neglected Brighton Block was sold. Once the development of the 1912 building is completed by Primavera Development Group, the Brighton Block will be restored back to its glory with the addition of three floors, and office and retail mixed-use space. 9666 Jasper Ave
