Free Downtown Walking Tours

Join the Downtown Ambassadors for a high-energy walking tour of Downtown Edmonton. Along the way, you’ll learn fascinating stories from Edmonton’s past & present.

Monday to Friday 10 am Free Walking Tour (Tuesday pm 5:30)

Enjoy Downtown Edmonton like a true local in the Downtown Business Association’s Stories of Our Streets Tour. This free 90-minute walking tour starts on the historic 104 Street Promenade in the warehouse district. Here you’ll admire some of the city’s oldest buildings and discover some of the Downtown Edmonton’s best coffee shops and restaurants. Next, you’ll visit Canada’s first Neon Sign Museum, a collection of more than 20 restored and working signs from Edmonton’s glorious past.

Take your photo with the Wayne Gretzky statue before heading inside Rogers Place, home of the Edmonton Oilers. Then get ready for an enlightening stroll through the Arts District as you walk past the Royal Alberta Museum, Art Gallery of Alberta, Winspear Centre and Citadel. The tour will end at the 101 Street Funicular, where participants can take a free ride down to Edmonton’s river valley for spectacular views of Downtown and the North Saskatchewan River.

Tours are available weekday mornings and Tuesday evenings.

July 25 PM ONLY - A Century of Architecture and Design in Edmonton

While Edmonton may not be old, architecturally speaking, it boasts a surprisingly diverse and progressive history of design and architecture reflecting our evolution from agricultural boomtown, to work shed of the oil industry, to cultural hot spot on the Prairie. Explore some of our city’s architectural gems hidden in plain sight, and learn about the evolution of our downtown through its historic buildings.

August 8 ONLY - Edmonton’s Chinatown

Edmonton’s Chinatown is one of the largest by size in Canada. Its history has been largely ignored as it is the story of newly arrived immigrants and people who have been seen as ‘other’. Join us for an exploration of the complex and rich history of Chinatown both North and South, and the bridge that separates them. The tour will be led by K. Linda Tzang, executive director of the Chinatown Transformation Collective.
