This tour will go in-depth into the artwork and the process of creating this olfactory experience. Smell, a sense that is strongly and directly connected to long-term memory, uniquely allows people to access past places, experiences and emotions through the faintest association. ‘Jasmine from Grasse’ invites you to journey to a specific moment in someone else’s life through an olfactory encounter.
This tour is happening during our monthly free night at the AGA, which happens the last Thursday of the month from 4-7 pm. Please note registration is recommended but not required.
About the exhibition Scents of Movement, Scents of Place
Smell can both transport and direct. This exhibition uses smells as artworks and includes scents that relate to travel, migration, immigration, navigation, and transportation. There are scents of places that will be familiar, unfamiliar, reachable and unreachable. It includes scents from very specific times and places as well as smells of imaginary, otherworldly and mundane places. Scents of Movement, Scents of Place touches on broad notions of life, death, myriad world views, subjectivity, colonization and what we can know through our nose.
Scents of Movement, Scents of Place is organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta and curated by Lindsey Sharman.
