Lifelong Edmonton musician Don Berner decided at the age of 35, it was time to chase another dream.
What started as a commercial endeavour, playing jazz with fellow musicians at corporate events, the saxophone player decided to go bigger. In a city with the oldest volunteer-run jazz venue, Yardbird Suite, and home of legendary jazz pianist, the late Tommy Banks, it made sense.
“I thought, I’m gonna risk my own money and put together a quarterly concert series,” said Berner.
That was in 2020, a year none of us will forget (as much as we try). So, of course, the journey of the Don Berner Big Band starts in 2021 when it received grant money to get on stage.
Now, almost four years in, the 18-piece band calls the Triffo Theatre at MacEwan University home and plays around six concerts a year.
“We have one singer, four [in the] rhythm section, five saxophones, four trombones and four trumpets,” said Berner. “And it’s pretty much every A-lister musician in town.”
Edmonton happens to be rich with musicians, thanks in large part to MacEwan University’s Music Program which has produced thousands of graduates for the past 50 years.
For those unfamiliar with a jazz big band.
“It’s epic,” said Berner. “With the exception of a full symphony orchestra, there’s nothing as powerful.”
The Don Berner Big Band is meant to be accessible, so jazz fans can enjoy local entertainment and those new to the scene can get a show for under $50 at an intimate 415-seat theatre.
The university is adding to the evening with an offer to stay at MacEwan University Residence, which offers affordable guest rooms.
“They’re giving 15 per cent off to people who want to stay there for their shows,” said Berner. “So, for 150 bucks you can come downtown, enjoy a meal, stay in the hotel and see a show.”
The Don Berner Big Band plays next on Feb. 22. For more details and tickets visit donbernerbigband.com.
