This workshop introduces participants to chigiri-e, the traditional Japanese at of collage using hand-torn paper. In this contemporary adaptation, participants tear magazines instead of washi paper to repurpose the colours and textures of printed images to “paint” a completely different object.

This is a drop-in workshop; participants are welcome to join at any time and work at their own pace. Each participant will receive an instruction booklet, along with all necessary materials, including glue sticks, blank paper as the canvas, and magazines pre sorted and torn by colour.

The workshop begins with a short introduction and live demonstration using a partially completed example. Participants will be guided through selecting a subject, with instruction on different paper-tearing techniques such as feathered edges, straight tears, and organic shapes, as well as how to layer torn paper to create form. The facilitator will circulate throughout the workshop to provide individual coaching, answer questions, and offer support as needed.

Participants will leave with a completed chigiri-e piece, as well as an introduction to visual literacy skills, including how to “see” texture, colour, and light, and how to deconstruct and translate these elements into a composition.

This activity is suitable for all ages, though adult supervision is recommended for younger children.
