Exploring the intersection of artistic practice and civic life

Latitude 53 invites members and guests to the opening reception of Artist civil service, an experimental program that reimagines how artists engage with their community. Organized by the gallery and artist Zachary Ayotte, the project supported four Edmonton-based visual artists as they balanced part-time civil service roles with their artistic practices over a four-month period.

The program explores alternative funding models for the arts while investing in the civic infrastructure that sustains Edmonton. By embedding artists in volunteer and community service projects—including health care, infrastructure and senior care—the project fostered new connections between creative work and the city’s civic life. The reception offers a first look at the outcomes of this unique residency and the creative work developed during the artists’ time in these essential roles.
