The Ociciwan Contemporary Art Centre presents Miyo wahkohtowin, a new solo exhibition by nêhiyaw (Cree) artist Arsene Joseph Alexander Arcand. As Edmonton’s fourth Indigenous artist in residence, Arcand uses his stone carving practice to reflect deep-rooted teachings of kinship, protection, ceremony and care. The collection is grounded in nêhiyaw knowledge and serves as a powerful exploration of ancestral connection.
Presented in partnership with the Edmonton Arts Council and the City of Edmonton’s Indigenous Relations Office, this exhibition provides an intimate look at how traditional teachings translate into contemporary sculpture. Visitors are invited to explore the gallery space during the three-week run to experience these tactile stories of cultural preservation and artistic innovation.

Stone carving tradition: The exhibition showcases Arcand’s unique approach to stone sculpture, blending physical craftsmanship with spiritual and cultural storytelling.
Artist residency: This collection represents the culmination of Arcand’s work and research during his tenure as the city’s Indigenous artist in residence.

Artist talk: Join the artist at the gallery on Saturday, June 20, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for an in-depth discussion about his creative process, the cultural significance of his materials and the inspiration behind the collection.
