What you need to know about getting to Downtown, or anywhere in the city, for that matter, when the Pope's in town

If you haven’t heard the Pope is coming to Edmonton July 23 to July 27 and it’s estimated that 50,000-plus visitors will be Edmonton to see him at the Commonwealth Stadium. This means that you should expect some traffic delays getting into and out of the Downtown core. We’re serving you notice now,  so you can plan alternate routes and ways to get to and from Downtown when attending Taste of Edmonton, Al Fresco On 104 and Downtown restaurants and other businesses. Here’s what you need to know about getting around Edmonton on July 23 to July 27.

Road and Highway Closures

Saturday, July 23

  • Road Closures  – 96 Street, from 108 Avenue to 108A Avenue, including the east sidewalk, alleys
  • Parking Restrictions – Louise McKinney Riverfront Park parking lot will be closed

Friday, July 24

  • Road Closure  – 96 Street, from 108 Avenue to 108A Avenue, including the east sidewalk, alleys
  • Motorcade Movements – The QEII will have road closures and limited access when the Pope travels from the Edmonton International Airport to his destination.
  • Parking Restrictions – Louise McKinney Riverfront Park parking lot will be closed

Saturday, July 25

  • Road Closure  – 96 Street, from 107A Avenue to 109 Avenue
  • Road Closure  – 108 Avenue, from 95 Street to 97 Street
  • Road Closure – 108A Avenue, from 95 Street to 97 Street
  • Road Closure – 109 Avenue, from 95 Street to 97 Street
  • Highway Access – There will be restricted access to the QEII and Highways 611 and 2A near Ponoka, Maskwacis and Wetaskiwin
  • Parking Restriction – Louise McKinney Riverfront Park parking lot will be closed
  • Parking Restriction – Parking lots at Commonwealth Stadium and Commonwealth Recreation Centre will be closed

Sunday, July 26

  • Road Closure  – 96 Street, from 108 Avenue to 108A Avenue, including the east sidewalk and alleyways
  • Road Closure – Stadium Road, from 92 Street to 112 Avenue
  • Road Closure – Muttart crossing, from Stadium Road to 106A Avenue
  • Road Closure – 107A Avenue eastbound lanes from 92 Street to 95 Street
  • Highway Access – There will be closures and limited access along Highways 16, 43 and 633 for the Pope’s visit to Lac Ste. Ann.
  • Parking Restriction – Louise McKinney Riverfront Park parking lot will be closed
  • Parking Restriction – Parking lots at Commonwealth Stadium and Commonwealth Recreation Centre will be closed
  • Parking Restrictions – Residential parking restrictions will be in effect in the the neighbourhoods around Commonwealth Stadium

Saturday, July 23

  • Highway Access – The QEII will have closures and limited access when the Pope leaves Edmonton.
  • Parking Restrictions – Louise McKinney Riverfront Park parking lot will be closed until noon.
