On the first weekend of May every year, Jane’s Walk festivals take place in hundreds of cities across the globe. Jane’s Walks encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.
Jane’s Walk in Edmonton is being coordinated by a local organizing committee made up of community volunteers and staff of supportive organizations. There have been Jane’s Walks in Edmonton every year since 2010.

What’s in Store for Downtown: The Next 10 Years
Join Tom, who is probably one of the most informed City staff when it comes to what is happening in our Downtown, for the seventh year in a row on a walk looking at the various developments that are revitalizing our streets, public places, and transportation modes in the downtown core.

Downtown East: Past and Present
Head on a stroll through the “other” side of downtown. Hear an introduction to the area’s rich history, and how planning and urban design have influenced what’s built today. Together, you’ll look closely at the buildings, streetscapes, and public spaces that define the area. Come channel your inner urbanist as you observe the city and ask, “What Would Jane Do?”

Strikes, Struggles, and Success: An ECAMP Walking Tour
Discover working-class stories of Edmontonians who’ve built our city through this downtown walking tour. You’ll learn about Indigenous labour and the pemmican industry, women workers at the Great Western Garment factory, immigrant contributions to city infrastructure, and key strikes and protests, including the amusing 1947 Chocolate Bar Strike. You’ll also get a taste of modern pemmican, see where Edmontonians have worked throughout the river valley, and get to make your own protest signs!

Twenty-first century public libraries are increasingly recognized as community gathering spaces. This Jane’s Walk will explore how a library—like a good park or vibrant city block—can connect people from all walks of life.

East Downtown Queer Places
Much of the history, changes and public perspective of the 80’s and 90’s about and for the lives of 2SLGBTQ+ Edmontonians happened in City Hall, Police Headquarters, the Courts, the Citadel and Library in the centre of the city. Each guest will also receive an ‘Edmonton Queer Downtown’ map.
