New wave documentary screening

Back by popular demand, the Chúng Ta Cùng Nhau (We Are Together) Vietnamese-Edmonton Cultural Society presents a special screening of New Wave. Held at the Art Gallery of Alberta theatre on World Refugee Day, this moving documentary explores how synth-beats, mile-high hair and underground dance parties helped a generation of young Vietnamese-American youth navigate identity, belonging and ancestral trauma.

Directed by Elizabeth Ai, the film begins as an exploration of the rebellious 1980s punk and new wave subculture in Orange County, California. It quickly evolves into a profound narrative of healing, capturing how music provided a sanctuary for a generation grappling with the weight of their parents’ experiences with war and displacement. Following the film, attendees are invited to head to Chinatown for an optional community dinner and discussion at Xu Hue restaurant.

Event highlights

Returning favourite: After drawing 200 attendees to its initial local screening in November 2025, this highly requested encore presentation offers the community another opportunity to experience the film together.
Support a local non-profit: All ticket proceeds directly support the volunteer-led initiatives of the Vietnamese-Edmonton Cultural Society.
Chinatown community dinner: Extend the evening at Xu Hue (10552 97 St NW) starting at approximately 6:30 p.m. for an optional post-film dinner and group discussion.

Film rating: The documentary is rated “B” and is considered appropriate for teenagers and older audiences.
Accessibility: The theatre is located on the basement level of the Art Gallery of Alberta and is fully accessible by elevator or stairs.
