Ever wondered how museum professionals preserve those stunning insect displays? Join the Royal Alberta Museum for a special hands-on workshop to celebrate Learn About Butterflies Day!
Partnering with expert entomologists from the Northern Forestry Centre, this workshop gives youth a behind-the-scenes look at the science of preservation. Participants will learn how to pin and preserve specimens for scientific study, discovering what these vital pollinators tell us about Alberta’s local ecosystems. Best of all, every student will receive their own insect to pin and a shadow box to take home.
Workshop Highlights:
Expert Instruction: Learn directly from Northern Forestry Centre entomologists.
Hands-On Skills: Practice real techniques used by museum researchers.
Take Home Project: Each participant leaves with their own pinned specimen and a display shadow box.
Age-Specific: Designed specifically for youth in Grades 5 to 8 (ages 10–14).
Important Note: This is a drop-off activity. Due to limited space in the workshop area, parents cannot accompany participants, but are welcome to explore the museum galleries while they wait!
When: Saturday, March 14 | 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Location: Royal Alberta Museum Lobby
