Preserving Your Prized Possessions: Learn Archival Skills at the RAM

Our personal histories are often held within the pages of old scrapbooks, delicate letters, and cherished photographs. To ensure these memories survive for generations to come, the Royal Alberta Museum is teaming up with the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) for a special hands-on preservation workshop.

This session provides a professional introduction to “best practices” for caring for your personal paper collections. You will learn about the common agents of deterioration and receive practical materials to protect a small collection of your own. This is a “roll-up-your-sleeves” workshop where you will actually create museum-quality housing for your items under the guidance of expert conservators.

Workshop Highlights:

Professional Guidance: Learn directly from RAM and PAA archivists and conservators.

Hands-on Skills: Master the do’s and don’ts of handling, storage, and display.

Custom Preservation: You will receive archival-quality materials to protect your specific items.

What to Bring: You are invited to bring one scrapbook OR a small collection of photos/letters (no larger than a shoebox).

Important Note: Registration is required and usually closes early (often by March 6) so the conservation team can prepare the correct materials for your specific items.

When: Thursday, March 26 | 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM
Location: The Roundhouse at the Royal Alberta Museum
Cost: $36 (Includes Museum General Admission)
